Day Lily: Hermerocallis

There are many varieties in today’s cultivars and they tend to exhibit more vibrant colours, larger blooms and sturdier plants. I chose the fairly common variety of “Purple d’Oro” for this watercolour piece for its delicate transitional pinkish purple blooms with deeper toned veins and a buttery coloured throat. I have also illustrated the interesting plant development from early buds, through full blooms, through to the dried out end stage all happening within the plant’s own perennial seasonal life.

These reliable plants bloom in waves from summer to fall, and can be everblooming and worry-free for gardeners to maintain. There is an Ontario Daylily Society who follow the constant development of more and more beautiful varieties.
