Echinacea: E. purpurea americanum

This composition of an Echinacea plant, also known as Coneflower, was painted in watercolour. This hardy, showy, mid-Summer flowering perennial blooms with pink-mauve daisy-like drooping petals. The double helix cone, tipped in a rust colour, demonstrates the painting challenges it presents for the artist.

Portions of the leaves demonstrate where insects have been ingesting the growth, which also provides further visual interest.
