Fiddleheads 1 (Ostrich Fern)
Fiddleheads: Matteuccia struthiopteris
This composition of a four stem Fiddlehead, together with a dried stem, was painted in watercolour. These ancient and strangely elegant fronds shoot up in early Spring from a tightly woven and intricate circular stem formation. Throughout history the many species of Ferns have held a fascination for artists. They are named for their resemblance to scrolls and a fiddle. The addition of a dried and brittle branch from the previous season has been painted in to demonstrate further visual interest.
