Flowering Dogwood: Cornus florida

There are numerous species of this genus. I thought the colourful and delicate blooms of the “Cherokee Chief” variety were particularly visually beautiful. The Cornus florida variety is a group of hybrids of vigorous growers and dependable being disease resistant. The popularly planted and often-seen white bloom variety with lime green centres does present a challenge to the artist in defining these blooms when painting in the traditional botanical white background.

From winter bark to summer berries, and from spring blooms to fall foliage, these diverse and dependable shrub/small trees seem to embrace all the seasons with rewarding interest.
