Hawthorn
Hawthorn: Crataegus
The Crataegus thorn group of shrubs is part of several hundred species. They produce showy, white clusters of blossoms in early spring. By late summer, red/orange coloured fruit develop. In this late summer/early fall watercolour piece I show the long thorns and dried leaves which add more visual interest.
The famous “Mayflower” pilgrim ship was named after the English Hawthorn. Hummingbirds are attracted to these nectar-rich blooms.
