Hepatica

Hepatica: Hepatica americana

This watercolour piece of the native Hepatica plant is also known as Liverwort and part of the Buttercup or Crowfoot family. I look forward to the arrival of the pretty white to pink to mauve delicate flowers in my little native plant area of the garden.

In early May, or as soon as the remains of snow have melted, you can see the tufts of flowers starting to appear. These small plants have very distinctive three lobed, rounded, basal leaves. They are the first wild flowers of our Canadian spring to emerge and can be found growing in the wilds of forests as well as open clearings.
