House Finch on Dogwood

Dogwood: Cornus racemose

In the fall months the leaves of the Dogwood turn vibrant in colour, along with red coloured stems and branches. Clusters of small berries appear initially in a greenish-white colour developing into darker tones of blue. This hardy bush provides a good and safe habitat for small birds. I created this piece using coloured pencil to illustrate the intensity of the fall colours. Although birds, bees and insects are not always approved of by being added to botanical pieces, I personally feel they do add a lot of visual interest to the viewer.

Branches from these bushes are often harvested to be used decoratively in fall and winter indoor and outdoor container arrangements.
