Mayapple

Mayapple: Podophyllum peltatum

The Mayapple’s early Spring arrival with its distinctive and unique stem and leaf development depicted in this water colour piece show just how unusual this native plant is. Just below the leaf formation you will see a single delicate white flower. The fascinating and tightly emerging leaves gradually unfurl creating an umbrella-like appearance.

With an interest in native plants I have a cultivated Mayapple growing in my garden and look forward to that lone little bloom each Spring, but they can be found growing naturally in the wild.
