Trout Lilies

Woodland Trout Lilies: Erythonium americanum

There is a very short window of opportunity to observe and photograph this early Spring native plant. The distinctive leaves emerge up through the dense and protective layers of the decaying forest floor. These tightly coiled leaves unfurl to a slender single stem rising up with a crowning flower of yellow petals, tilted backwards. In this watercolour composition the leaves show their unusual and striking markings, resembling the outer skin of a Trout fish.
